Fluke 1503 – Must Have Insulation Resistance Meter

Insulation Resistance Meters, also known as colloquially, meggers, are electrical meters used to assess the condition of the insulation on wire and motor windings.  The tester indicates the insulation resistance value by injecting a known DC voltage in accordance with electrical standards and then measuring the current flowing. The output is given in k ohm, M ohm, and G ohm. By comparing this insulation resistance value to the accepted values from the standard, the quality of the insulation resistance is determined.

There are three primary terminals on each insulation resistance tester: line, earth, and guard. The line terminal is connected to the conductor or winding being tested, the earth terminal is connected to the metal frame of the equipment, which is normally earthed, and the guard terminal is used in special circumstances. Using an Insulation Resistance Meter on a regular basis to check insulation in both new installations and as part of a maintenance program is a prudent way to ensure the safety of your circuits.

Fluke 1503 Insulation Resistance Meter

The Fluke 1503 covers every aspect of an insulation tester that an engineer requires. Its ergonomic design makes it simple to use, the straightforward function dial allows the engineer to navigate what test they want to perform, the accuracy means they can rely on the measurements they are reading, and the rugged design means it can withstand the wear and tear of day-to-day work.

The insulation test range on the 1503 is 0.1 M to 2G, and the insulation is evaluated at 500V and 1000V (for further voltages test, use the Fluke 1507). Voltage measurements ranging from 0.1 to 600V. This insulation tester can identify live circuits, preventing an insulation test if the voltage exceeds 30V. The product also has an auto discharge of capacitive voltage as a safety feature. The 1503 can also perform resistance measurements ranging from 0.01 to 20.00 k.

Features:

  • AC/DC voltage ranges from 0.1V to 600V, and resistance ranges from 0.01ohm to 20.00Kohm.
  • Insulation tests are performed from 0.01Mohm to 2000Mohm, with two insulation test voltages: 500V and 1000V.
  • Auto-discharge of capacitive voltage is included for added user protection.
  • Provides earth-bond continuity at low ohms (200 mA).
  • The remote test probe simplifies repetitive or difficult-to-reach testing.
  • Auto power off conserves battery power.
  • Results are displayed on a large, backlit display.
  • It has a CAT IV 600V overvoltage rating.
  • Accepts the optional Fluke TPAK magnetic hanging system, which allows you to free up your hands for other tasks.
  • For at least 1000 insulation tests, it is powered by four AA alkaline batteries (NEDA 15 A or IEC LR6).

Compact, Rugged, Reliable, and Easy to Use

The compact Fluke 1503 Insulation Tester, with its multiple test voltages, is ideal for many troubleshooting, commissioning, and preventative maintenance applications. Additional features on these tools, such as the remote probe, reduce the time required to perform repetitive testing.

The Fluke 1503 is a compact electrical insulation testing tool that handles the most common tests at a low cost. Its compact size makes it simple to transport and use. And its low cost makes it an excellent buy.
