Fixed-Mount Thermal Monitoring With the Fluke RSE600: Applications, Setup and Reporting

A handheld thermal camera shows the temperature of a target at the moment the image is taken. Some jobs need more than that. A circuit board heating up through a test cycle, a process step that drifts during a shift, or a motor that only runs hot under certain loads all need a camera that stays in one place and records the whole time.

The Fluke RSE600 Mounted Infrared Camera is built for this kind of work. It’s a stationary, fully radiometric camera that streams 640 x 480 thermal video to a PC running SmartView R&D software, where every pixel carries a temperature value that can be measured, trended and reported. Fluke lists its applications as equipment troubleshooting, preventive and predictive maintenance, building diagnostics, and research and development.

Where a Fixed-Mount Camera Fits

The RSE600 suits jobs where the target stays in the same place and the temperature over time matters more than a single reading.

Product Testing and R&D

Engineers testing electronics, batteries or new components can mount the camera over a test bench and record how heat builds and spreads during a test run. With a spatial resolution of 0.93 mRad, a minimum focus distance of 15 cm and an optional macro lens, small components can be measured individually. The 60 Hz version streams up to 60 frames per second, so fast heating events can be reviewed frame by frame after the test.

Production and Quality Assurance

On a production line, the camera can watch a step where temperature affects quality, such as heating, sealing or curing. High and low temperature color alarms highlight anything outside the expected range, and SmartView R&D can capture images or recordings automatically when preset conditions are met. Out-of-range events are kept for review without someone watching the screen.

Equipment Monitoring

For a motor, electrical panel or other critical asset, a fixed camera records the temperature trend across a full shift or load cycle. A slow rise that a periodic spot check would miss shows up clearly on a trend plot. The camera can be viewed and controlled remotely through SmartView R&D, so technicians can check the asset without standing next to it. Our article on 24/7 thermal monitoring with the RSE600 covers this use in more detail, and our guide to early signs of equipment failure in industrial systems covers the warning signs worth watching for.

For walk-around inspections across many assets, a handheld camera such as the Fluke Ti401 PRO or Fluke TiX580 is still the practical choice. Our article on the features that make Fluke thermal cameras reliable in the field compares what each type does well.

Installation Requirements

Reliable data from a mounted camera depends mostly on the setup. These are the points to plan for before installation.

  • Position and lens. The standard lens covers a 34° x 24° field of view. Optional smart lenses change this: a wide-angle lens for larger scenes, 2x or 4x telephoto lenses for distant targets, and a macro lens for close-up detail. The right lens depends on the size of the target and its distance from the mounting point.
  • Mounting. The camera has tripod and accessory mounting holes, and Fluke offers an optional mounting base (FLK-RSE-MB). The camera needs to stay still, because any movement shifts the measurement areas set up in the software.
  • Network connection. The camera connects to the PC by wired Ethernet using the GigE Vision interface. Fluke recommends a stable network without interference from other systems, no VPN connection, and no other data-heavy applications running on the same PC or network, as these can cause data loss.
  • Power. Power comes from the supplied AC adapter (15 V DC). The camera’s M12 Ethernet port also supports power over Ethernet.
  • Operating environment. The camera operates from -10 °C to 50 °C at 10% to 95% relative humidity (non-condensing). The housing is rated IP67 and tested for vibration and shock. An LED on the camera turns solid red if the surrounding temperature is too high.
  • Warm-up and focus. Fluke recommends a 60-minute warm-up before taking measurements. Focus is adjusted in SmartView R&D, so it can be set remotely after the camera is mounted.
  • Measurement settings. The software includes reflected background temperature compensation and transmission correction, which helps when the camera views the target through an infrared window.

Setting Up the Camera

  1. Attach the antenna.
  2. Fix the camera on a flat surface, tripod or mounting base.
  3. Connect the M12 end of the Ethernet cable to the camera and the RJ45 end to the PC.
  4. Connect the 15 V DC power cable to the camera and a power outlet.
  5. Wait for the LED indicator to turn solid green, which shows the camera is ready and connected.
  6. Remove the lens cover.
  7. Open SmartView R&D, focus the image and set up the measurement areas.

Monitoring and Analysis in SmartView R&D

SmartView R&D is included with the camera and is where the monitoring, measurement and analysis happen.

  • Measurement markers: spot, line, box and circle markers, unlimited user-defined spot markers, and a center box showing minimum, maximum and average temperature.
  • Real-time trends: point, area, mix, profile and boxline trends that plot temperature over time for each marker or area.
  • Color alarms: high temperature, low temperature and isotherm alarms that highlight areas outside the set range.
  • Image capture: radiometric images and recordings captured manually or automatically when preset conditions are met.
  • IR-Fusion: a built-in 5 MP visible light camera and five blending modes (AutoBlend, picture-in-picture, IR/visible alarm, full infrared and full visible) to show exactly where a hot spot sits on the equipment.
  • Notes: IR PhotoNotes and text annotations attach context to each image.

Reporting Outputs

Results can be saved and shared in several forms, depending on who needs them.

Output Format Use

Choosing the Fluke RSE600

The RSE600 is the right fit when the target stays in one place and the question is how its temperature changes over time. It records continuously, measures every pixel, and turns the results into trends, alarms, exports and reports that engineers and maintenance teams can act on. With the camera mounted, focused and connected, the monitoring keeps running whether or not anyone is at the screen.
